I was born and raised in Seoul, Korea &#38;amp; Tyler, Texas. Now, I’m based in New York, New Jersey area. A Continuous Learner

How I Design



	

Clear and open communication is the key to my design. The key element of my design is a clear understanding of the users and stakeholders so that I can create user-friendly and successful design solutions that meet user needs and align with project goals. This is created when the designers, users, and stakeholders can freely share their opinions. As a product designer, my first goal is to build trust between designers, users, and stakeholders by creating an open environment where anyone can easily ask questions and exchange ideas, preferences, and expectations. Good ideas can come from anyone, from anywhere, and at any time, so why shy away from them?🚀️

I enjoy many activities like running, visiting museums, and trying out new bars and restaurants. Where I’m running&#38;nbsp;🏃



	I go for a run about 3 to 4 times a week, along the Hudson River, either on the Manhattan side or Jersey City side of the river. Currently, I’m not planning on any race but casually training to go a little further, and a little faster at a time. 🏃&#38;nbsp;
But then again, I very often get distracted by encountering these sorts of things 🙃️

Overview





	

In the company-wide digital workspace modernization effort, I led the design effort of a new, holistic workspace home the replaces legacy applications and provides centralized process and easy access to information 

in different services.



I defined the product and experience through research and advocated user-centric approach to the product. During the process, I initiated practice of user and process documentation and created application’s structure and behavior which increase workspace efficiency by 43%.

	Clear understanding of users’ perspective was the first requirement of design solutioning.

Our users are more than their “tasks”



	



I noticed discrepancies between the business northstar and the actual user needs: the product team’s understanding on the users were mainly based on their in-app task, with no focus on their behavior, attitude, and context. Eager to establish clear and shared understanding of the end users, I created end-user persona based on each types of engineer.

I practiced mixed research methodology 

to understand user’s process, behaviors, and attitutdes. The research included, but was not limited to, multiple 1:1 user interviews, user shadowing, focus group studies, and contextual inquiries.

I shadowed 10 end-users 

to further understand the user’s detailed processes within the service. By mapping out the service blueprint, I was able to not only document a process that did not have a clear, holistic documentation of, but also uncover the complexity that lies within the user’s day-to-day jobs to be done.

I discovered a fatal complication of workflow in which 
users were frequently swivel seating between 20+ in-house and third-party applications throughout their day. This excessive swiveling was due to the disconnection between applications followed by siloed practices within the digital ecosystem.

	Foraging for information

	In the legacy system, the exhausitive information spreaded piece-by-piece accross different pages were

required users to navigating through many pages and going through long scrollings to forage for information specific for their tasks at the moment. The excessive traveling between pages and scrolling caused inefficient economy of movement.

	Multiple usability issues throughout the service workflow

	While the legacy applications were technically feasible, they were not easy to use and learn. I have found many usability issues shared among multiple applications. There were 3 main issues that were greatly affecting the workflow efficiency which were: 


	1. Ambiguous terminologies.Many platforms had different ways to address the same object. Inconsistent  terminology and overused accronyms disturbed intuitive use of the tools, setting a high learning curve.

2. Hard-to-use and incomplete navigation.
Cluttered in-app navigations left users disoriented while the links often did not function properly which confused users.

3. Inconsistent design element.&#38;nbsp;
The tools were created prior to Dell Design System and were never updated. The inconsistent UI led to unstandardized communication methods in colors, icons, and interaction patterns.&#38;nbsp;

	Critical information and functions being spreaded accross many locations required users to swivel seat excessively. A 
single workspace home

 where data aggregates and is distributed was needed to create a more centralized, consolidated servicing experience for internal users.&#38;nbsp;

	Practice: Providing what is necessary to those who needs it





	Individual users required different sets of information and functions based on their roles. In the legacy process, users had to spend time foraging for the materials they need. I hypothesized that providing personalized materials to the users will reduce unecessary use of time. I have put users in 8 groups based on their roles and divided project into multiple tasks providing focused view.&#38;nbsp;

To provide the personalized materials based on each user roles, I had to understand how the users’ minds categorize each pieces of information and which pieces of information are critical per different tasktypes.

We made decisions to: Have both project and type-specific task details always and easily accessible by users,Group information in modules for clear and easy access (&#38;amp; reusable in dev perspective), Grant “edit” authority to each users based on their roles.

NavigationIt was difficiult to find desired items in the legacy portal application’s navigation as the list was long, unstructured, and required a lot of scrolling. I have reorganized the navigation items into a more intuitive format that supports the new structure. 
This change in particular reduced time of navigation to 40%.

The design focus of this tool was consolidated delivery of information and adequate support for user’s potential actions. Immediate testing for the information and interactions was important, especially for the users who were dependent on the critical information and process.

The research on which piece of information is needed for whom, during which tasktype also defined what actions user needs to make with those information. I worked very closely with SMEs and end users to define and test out the adaptability of the new design. 
The way in which we achieved this was by quick concept testing with realistic and therefore relatable data as an example as shown above.

	1. I first designed a minimal dashboard that works as a simple list which presents user’s jobs-to-be-done.&#38;nbsp;

	2. I found that the to-do list which contains all task requires users has to search for an item and creates complication on the user’s end. I decided to redistribute the items by task types.

	3. Having multiple lists of work items came with drawbacks of longer scrolls which made it harder to gain a holistic sense of user’s tasks. I added a summary section which provides overview and notifies users of work items that requires attention.&#38;nbsp;

Searching Experience in Digital Workspace

During user shadowing to understand the users’ workflow, I found multiple cases of inefficiency due to the complex process of accessing critical information. However, as the organization has been using the legacy platform for 15+ years, users and the stakeholders did not question this experience and considered it as a “natural process.”

When users are searching for information, their actions can be broken down into 3 phases.&#38;nbsp;These 3 user actions became the bone structure of the feature.&#38;nbsp;

The new process increases “economy of movement” of the users. 

The legacy application’s information loading approach was unnecessarily rigid, repetitive, and unclear. The new design solved above inefficiency issue by providing a more forgiving methods of execution and error recovery.

strategy discussions: 
diverse brainstorming sessions between Designers, Subject Matter Experts, Business team created learning experiences which ensured a well-rounded and strategic approach to problem-solving.



Strategic approach to Baby Duck Syndrome: while the new experience included significant difference from the process users were used to, making the experience intuitive and balancing between new concepts and the old process helped users feel less forced or imposed put the effort to “learn.”


What I would improve....

Tracking quantitative data earlier on: The initial phase of the project was more based on insights from qualitative user research due to technical limitation. I wish I could gather the user’s behavioral insights via quantitative data collecting as well to make a more data-informed design decisions.

Context

I have brought the product from its very early concept stage to its market launch. In the process, I have facilitated user studies, created prototypes, set design systems, delivered design justifications, and closely collaborated with the development team throughout the ongoing iterative process of designing the product.

(Note: The word “Insa” is a Korean word for greeting. )
Insa is a communication app designed to bring back human communication.
 The app augments the interpersonal communication methods for those who are suffering from the lack/fear of human communication and help them be heard &#38;amp; stay connected with their loved ones.

Insa provides:


Fun conversation starters with which users can easily start expressing themselves.Quick and easy method of mood sharing with which users can share as little as 10 seconds a day to share how they are.

What are the problems with their current method of everyday conversations?

Concepts




Daily Shares (Video messaging with guided topics)
Conversation topics are delivered to the users every day to bring more fun and insightful conversation between users and their connections. Giving users a specific topic to talk about helps them more clearly articulate themselves feel easier about sharing about themselves.






Daily Check-in (Mood posting)
Users can easily share their moods during their day through a very simple interaction of choosing a degree of their happiness and sharing with others. Simplifying the mood-sharing process removes unrelated small talk between users, and allows each user to pay more attention to how their connections are feeling.







	Concept Testing

	

What do the solutions bring to the users, and what are their reactions?





We conducted 2 weeks-long concept testings and conducted focus group interviews from different cultures and countries to find out how we can enhance their communication method.From the study and the interviews, we found out that many participants showed positive reactions when family conversations were based on small specific topics.

Based on the user flow, I started listing out every detail of each feature. The list included the dynamics within the app regarding what data should be collected from the users, and what contents should be delivered to the users.
To better follow up with each version update, I have separated each item into “As-is” (current version) and “To-be” (next version).

As the Check-In feature provides a degree of happiness from which the users will choose and share, option A was taken because it provided a clear affordance that users can slide or swipe to choose the right emotion they are feeling.&#38;nbsp;

As I did not want to burden the users to memorize the topic question while they are recording, it was important to have the topic question be clearly shown on the record screen. Also, so that the users can be aware of the remaining time of their video, I have added a progress indicator that visually show the users how much longer they can record. The original decision was option A but due to factors like screen real-estate, simpler interaction, and clearer indication of time, option A developed into option B.

Bring a more cohesive aesthetic and behaviors throughout the whole in-app ecosystem.

In taking a short video of oneself on a specific topic, the users need to know what they will talk about (topic), how long the video can be (duration), and how much time they have left (time). Through focus group user testing, I realized that improvements were needed.

	Problems found in the previous version

The design of the record button lacked the visual signifier as a ‘video’ record button, and the users were not familiar with the ‘tap and hold’ method of interaction.The previous ‘tap and hold’ interaction of the record button created a user-experience issue of the user's thumb covering the time tracker circle. The topic section was taking too much of the screen real-estate and the users were feeling cramped into a small frame.

NYC’s Stuyvesant Cove park is engineered as a native food forest where visitors can consume the plants in the park.

Stuyvesant Cove Park Info Guide is a tool to rebuild the connection between the park and its visitors.
The guide serves two main functions which are to:


Introduce the park’s forageable natural resourcesHelp visitors navigate in the park

Opportunity Space



	

Those who grow up or live in the city do not get to connect with the natural world.


I interviewed the park’s associates, volunteers, neighbors, and regular visitors to better understand and map out the park’s problem space. From the interviews, I found out many problems of the parks resulted from visitors not fully understanding the value of the park.

Understanding the users gave a more clear view of the opportunity space.
Stuyvesant cove park is a valuable resource for public education for various communities in the area. Here, two “How can we...” questions arose on how the project can best augment the park’s visitor’s experience.



	

1.&#38;nbsp; How can we inform inexperienced and experienced foragers of the plants that can be foraged in the park?

We sketched ways to reconnect the severed connection between people and nature by helping people notice the value of nature.

Believer is a web-based art experience raising awareness of the need for media literacy and self-criticality. By presenting how falsehood affects us, the work portrays a satirical caricature of contemporary society.



	

















	

How are we sure what we know is true?

Or do we just believe and forget about it?








	





	

Every day, we intake a vast amount of information flowing in from various digital media such as social media, messages with friends, and news broadcasts. With just a few taps and scrolls, anyone can have access to vast amounts of information.We also often misunderstand the nature of falsehood within the media as easily recognizable or hard to encounter and unconsciously refuse to see ourselves as potential victims of it.

In the era of post-truth where biases and falsehoods replace facts and spread into every corner of our society, Believer questions our ways of receiving information by satirically depicting the epitome of a person from the post-truth society.

Through a small set of interactions like questions and writing activities, the project actively engages with the audience to have them think about the truth they believe. The work initiates a conversation about media literacy, giving the audience a chance to stand before themselves and evaluate their self-criticality.

Through this experience, the audience faces the unpleasant but necessary mental experience for those living in the contemporary society of post-truth and ultimately become one step clofEvery daya amountmessageoser to being more aware and familiar with the idea of self skepticism and media literacy than they were before.
